DUKE OF EDINBURGH GOLF DAY HOSTED BY THE RIDGE A ROYAL SUCCESS
Witbank golfer, Trevor Owen, has secured his place at the finals of the Duke of Edinburgh Cup in June after winning the preliminary round hosted by The Ridge at Witbank Golf Club on Friday, 15 April 2011.
At the finals, to be held at the Pecanwood Golf and Country Club on June the 7th, he will compete against the 6 other regional finalists from around the country in a Powerplay Shoot Out for a chance to play on an international stage in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Individual World Final in the United Kingdom later in the year.
The Ridge’s Maureen Kivits has congratulated Owen for winning the prelim round and wishes him all the best for the finals: “The Duke of Edinburgh Golf Tournament is one of the most highly-anticipated golfing events on the South African sporting calendar. We are delighted to be able to give one of our local aspiring golfers this spectacular opportunity to compete with golfers from around the country in such a prestigious competition, as well as the possibility of competing overseas.
“We wish our winner every success for the finals. We hope that we will be fortunate enough to announce him the winner of the final competition and look forward to possibly waving him off at the airport as he embarks for the grand final in the United Kingdom.”
For winning the qualifying round, he won a two-night stay at the luxurious The Palazzo Hotel at Montecasino , limousine transfers to and from Witbank and a practice round of golf Pecanwood Golf and Country Estate, golfing hamper including a Glen Muir shirt and cap and the prize giving dinner .
If he wins the Powerplay Shoot Out , his prize will include a return air ticket to the United Kingdom plus transfers; hotel accommodation for five nights; an entry to the World Final for the Duke of Edinburgh Cup, and three rounds of golf including a rare chance to play at the Royal Household Golf Club at Windsor Great Park. He will also get to dine with a member of the Royal Family at the Prize Giving Dinner at Windsor Castle.
The Duke of Edinburgh Tournament was established under the patronage of His Royal Highness, Prince Phillip. It attracts participation from countries around the world and has raised $4 million for selected worldwide beneficiaries.
The Duke of Edinburgh Golf Tournament in South Africa is staged annually by Tsogo Sun Gaming. Qualifying golf days are presented across the country at by Emnotweni Casino, The Ridge Casino, Hemingways Casino, Suncoast Casino, Blackrock Casino, Montecasino and Caledon Casino.
According to Kivits, The Ridge Casino’s qualifying golf day was an enormous success, with all four balls sold out and R10 000 raised in aid of the Middelburg Care Village. This money will be handed to the charity on the 15th of April.
“Of course, the day had a full field, but more importantly, we were able to raise a considerable amount for our selected charity. We thank everyone who attended, played and helped make this event the success that it was,” says Kivits.
